Local governments are instrumental in achieving climate and environmental progress; however, they are often under-resourced, under-skilled and too siloed to enable the action needed.

In this session we’ll be exploring three case studies (each from councils led by a different party) to better understand how philanthropic funding can bolster the effectiveness of climate action at a local government level:

1. Upskilling

  • What is the skills gap?
  • How can it be filled?
  • Why isn’t it being done already?
  • Why should funders care?

2.  Leveraging other funding

  • How can external funding be used to unlock council budgets?
  • Why is it important to understand local authorities’ attitude to risk in this context?

3. Cross pollination

What needs to be done differently to encourage learnings and actions to be shared between departments, rather than climate action being siloed?e press and personal risk and ask what does it mean to be an activist today? And what difference does funding make?

How can collaboration around climate/environment be enabled internally within councils?
