The Environmental Funders Network (EFN), based in the UK, aims to increase the overall level of financial support for civil society groups working on environmental causes and to help increase the effectiveness of environmental philanthropy — and, ultimately, of environmental work. We bring together over 300 trusts, foundations and individuals making grants on environmental and conservation issues, and we also act as a resource to strengthen the effectiveness of the broader environment sector. This role is focused on supporting the broader sector.

About the role
Your work will mainly be to support environmental organisations (rather than funders) to be more effective in their fundraising, communications and environmental impacts. This will include developing and strengthening networks (such as our Green Fundraisers Forum) so that organisations and initiatives can better support and collaborate with one another; organising trainings and events; developing ideas for how EFN and others can further support NGO impact; and securing additional funding for activities within this strand of work. It will focus primarily on initiatives in the UK but may include some in other countries.
Key responsibilities and relationships
You will work closely with EFN’s Growing Philanthropy Director and Scotland Coordinator to develop a strategy for this work programme, drawing on EFN’s overall strategy and building on the findings of the upcoming edition of our What the Green Groups Said research (WTGGS, to be published early 2022) and the outcomes of a workshop supporting fundraisers to collaborate to bring more funds into the sector (to be held in Q1 of 2022), in addition to other sources of information.
Likely activities that you will oversee as part of the strategy will include:
- Managing and developing EFN’s Green Fundraisers Forum, set up to help environmental fundraisers collaborate with and support each other, and for us to provide training and convening opportunities for this group. Similarly, working closely with the independently-run Scottish Environmental Fundraisers Forum.
- Organising trainings and convenings for people from across the environment sector, based on needs identified through research (e.g. What the Green Groups Said), meetings, feedback sessions, etc.
- Coordinating activities that support information-sharing and partnership-building between funders and fundraising organisations, including organising convenings and, potentially, overseeing the development of mechanisms such as online databases.
- Developing and managing partnerships which support the sector, such as The Funding Network’s annual environment-focused event, and the Big Give Green Match Fund.
- Developing our programme of work to support civil society organisations across issue areas (e.g. from the social sector) to become more environmentally sustainable, by developing resources for charities and funders.
- Working with EFN’s Programme and Research Coordinator to produce surveys and research as appropriate.
- Helping to raise funds for this programme of work and for other initiatives that would strengthen the sector, e.g. from government, lottery sources and foundations.
Person specification – essential skills and experience
We are looking for an applicant with insights into how a sector as a whole might function more effectively and bring in more resources to support its work. Experience working on environmental or related issues would be helpful but we welcome applicants from other backgrounds who bring fresh perspectives on this kind of whole-sector-focused work. The ideal candidate will have experience planning and creating inclusive and outcomes-oriented events and resources. In addition, the following skills and experience are essential for the role:
- Efficiency – ability to accomplish a lot in short, focused periods of time
- Ability to make effective decisions, plan and prioritise a substantial workload
- Highly motivated team player who is able to work with minimal day-to-day supervision
- Well-developed and confident communications skills, both written and verbal, e.g. happy to talk on the phone, able to craft clear and compelling event/workshop invitations and write useful speaker briefings, etc.
- A creative and entrepreneurial mindset with a sense of responsibility to a wider membership group
- An enjoyment of people, and an enthusiasm for working within an organisational culture that emphasises kindness and mutual respect
- Trustworthiness, discretion and tact
- A strong interest in environmental issues and their intersection with social issues
- Solid IT skills, including Zoom or other online meeting platforms
The following skills and experience are not essential, but would be an advantage:
- Experience of coordinating networks of organisations/individuals
- Understanding of, or experience working within an NGO
- Experience of fundraising
- Experience of hosting/moderating events and meetings
- Experience with social media, in particular Twitter and LinkedIn
- Experience with contact management databases, e.g. Salesforce
- Experience managing the development of online databases or websites
Terms & Conditions
- Contract: Two-year fixed term contract; subject to a 6-month probationary period.
- Salary: £36,000 per year, pro-rated depending on hours worked plus 7% pension contribution.
- Workplace: Working from home, with occasional travel within the UK, most regularly to London.
- Regular virtual and periodic face-to-face contact with EFN staff, staff/volunteers at environmental organisations, and EFN members.
- Working hours: we are looking for someone who will work 3 to 5 days a week, depending on the candidate’s preference. For candidates looking to work fewer than 5 days per week, we are open to different configurations of working across the week, but the candidate does need to be able to provide some flexibility around events.
- Holidays: we offer 25 days per year in addition to bank holidays for full time employees, pro-rated for part-time employees.
- We provide a working from home allowance and cover reasonable work-related travel expenses.
